Projects

WASCAL: West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use

Work package 2.7 Biodiversity (together with the botany part at University of Rostock, Prof. Porembski):

  • diversity of insect pollinators along a land use gradient and its impact on the reproductive output of important cashcrops (cotton-Gossypium hirsutum, sesame-Sesamum indicum) in the sub-sudanian savannas of Burkina Faso, West-Africa;

  • ecology and habitat requirements (e.g. food and nesting resources) of important insect pollinator species for the conservation of vigorous insect pollinator populations in sub-sudanian savannas of Burkina Faso

  • studies on the reproductive ecology and herbivory of Moringa oleifera in Burkina Faso, cultivationtechniques for enhanced biomass production and fruit yield; socio-economics of Moringa cultivation

  • studies on the breeding system, self-compatibility, germination, inbreeding depression, need for pollinators, outcrossing rates etc. of cotton, sesame, Moringa oleifera

  • impact of climate change on the performance of cash crops
